Jacobine van der Meer

Through interrelated theatrical installations, sculptures, drawings and collages Jacobine van der Meer creates visual narratives in which the characters are often deconstructed versions of the human form. With a background in special effects makeup and prosthetic sculpture for the entertainment industry, altering facial features, creating body parts and simulating the effects of violence to the body, she incorporates materials and techniques used for film and stage productions.

In 1998 van der Meer moved from The Netherlands to California and since then lives and works in the Mojave Desert and the inner city of Los Angeles. Observations from these contrasting environs are visually translated and enlarged through the use of the characters. The natural, the artificial, the shelter and violence are recurring motifs. The process of making is made visible through layering and transparency. Her desert studio faces the live fire training facilities of the 29 Palms Marine Corps base where young players perform fictitious war games in a simulacrum of a Middle Eastern town.
